A new digital experience for an old, celebrated brand and its archives.
The storied fashion brand Chanel has a very long, rich history that encompasses many facets — the glamorous and mysterious life of Gabriel Chanel, the brand's place in popular culture, and the historical milestones of the brand itself. With all of this rich history, the internal team at Chanel was interested in building out an experience that would compile all of this rich history into one place. This experience had to put historical information front-and-center also surface a general section for questions and answers from the preservation team about how to care for and preserve historical Chanel pieces from the collection.
The overall approach to this site was a responsive web experience, in addition to an app that would mirror the visual look and feel of the web designs. Aesthetically, there was a fine line to tread between surfacing historical information while not making the brand feel old and dated. It still needed to maintain the sleek, progressive look of the Chanel brand. The experience was broken into sections (a general home page about the mission of the archives, places, timeline, objects, and culture) that were navigated to via the main nav. Each individual section was a long scrolling experience from top to bottom with lots of fluidity and motion throughout.
